Self – Study Aids — E-books

Friday, November 27th, 2009

This article is the first article of a series of articles I am going to publish regarding self – Study aids.  In today’s world, every day there is a new development and new discoveries with which any person aspiring to progress in life by utilizing new professional and business opportunities must keep abreast.  Many subjects, which are now taught in universities, were non-existent some twenty-five years ago.

In this situation, any aspiring individual discovers that he has to learn new subjects and in many situations, learning languages becomes a vital necessity.  However, the irony is everybody is short of time and attending evening course is a dream for many individuals.  For an aspiring person many self-study tools are available which will help him to learn a subject or language in a short span of time.

One of the tools that are available and very useful is an e-book.  An “e-book” is an electronic version of a paper – printed and bound book that has been published and available in bookstores.  E-books are available in the form of CDs and diskettes.  However, majority of them are available as downloadable files.  They can be downloaded in your desktop via internet and most of them can be read as PDF files.  Even though, many devices are available for reading e – books, most of the time they are not necessary, but if you are interested in utilizing them you can buy one of them.

The tremendous advantage of e-books is that they do not occupy physical space and for people like Sales representatives who travel frequently it is a great advantage; they can start studying the book whenever they are free.

E-books are available for almost many types of subjects like math,  physics,  green technology areas like solar energy, wind energy, etc and language learning purpose and many of them can be bought online through websites of publishers or authors or online book stores.  Even programmed learning manuals are available in electronic version.  Many e-books are available for free download and many are lesser priced than their physical counterparts are.  However, the most important aspect is that they are always with us without occupying physical space and increasing the weight.  As I had mentioned earlier this is very important for people who are traveling frequently.  I have repeated this aspect repetitively because I had been a marketing executive and being a lover learning new subjects I used to carry books with me and because of this I always had to carry a larger sized suitcase with me and because of this my colleagues always used to mock me.  Today I am using e-books and my suitcase size has been reduced.

So I can boldly say that for modern youths, especially youths living in metropolitan cities and hard-pressed for time, e-books will be a great help in developing their knowledge of latest subjects and developments in their area of specialization.  Simply by browsing the internet, you can know about the availability of e-books and you can get details from publishers.

How to use Google to keep your computer error free.

What do you do when an error message pops up on your screen?

Were do you go for help?

The first thing you need to do is write down the exact wording of the error message. Then hold down the Alt button and click on the Print Screen button. This will copy an image of the error message to your clipboard. Now you can open your paint program by clicking on your Start button > Programs > Accessories > Paint. On the menu bar, at the top of the program, click on Edit, then Paste. This will copy the picture of the error message into your Paint program and you can then save a copy of it. I advise making a folder on your hard drive and naming it something like Error Messages. Save a copy on any error messages you get into this folder for future reference.

Now open your Browser and go to www.google.com

Type the exact error message and click on the Search Button. Now comes the hard part. You will need to read the summaries of each link to find the one that closely matches your issue. Click on that link and check out that web site to see if it talks about your error message. Most of the time you will find you are at a forum site, with other people asking the same question. You can then see if anyone has answered the question on how to fix the error. You may have to look a while find the right answer, but I have found over the years this is your best resource for computer help.

Audio Review: the Book of Psalms Read by Michael York

Michael York has a wonderful reading voice for the Psalms

In my imagination, I think that the Psalms read by Michael York are read as if commissioned by King David. I can’t say as if King David himself were reading the Psalms, for that isn’t as accurate as the former, for the reading is clearly one spoken with eloquence fit for any hearer, even King David. High praise, are those remarks, and this collection of The Psalms are worth such praise.

The style of the reading is clear, musical without musical background but punctuated by musical notes between readings. The imagination given by Michael York, and there is that high praise again for this reading of 150 Psalms, comes through for these are rich and moving readings that involve the listener. I have had a set of these tapes for many years, given one set as a gift only to discover that they are to be found only among the used category for sale. Sadly, there will be a time when the set may go out of print. This is my second set of this collection.

As a note of comparison, there is a collection of readings of the King James Version of the Bible’s New Testament read by Gregory Peck. Like Mr. Peck, Mr. York has a distinct voice that shows he is a noteworthy voice of merit and offers an understanding of what he is reading, without getting in the way of the words or the text. To say that he is a man with a trained voice and excellent diction, like Mr. Gregory Peck, is to my way of thinking and listening accurate.

I have a number of “recorded” readings of Biblical material, including Gregory Peck, Sir Laurence Olivier, Alexander Scourby, and the out of print “The Bible” (the Old Testament in King James Version) read by numbers of actors with excellent voices. Michael York’s reading of The Psalms is certainly a central part of my collection of such audio recordings, and his voice is as distinct and memorable as any, if not more so. Hear him say, “Selah,” and you will know there is quality to both the recording and his interpretation.

For a complete, unabridged reading of the King James Version of The Psalms, one can be pleased to own and listen to this understandable and distinguished recording where Michael York reads memorably and so well these wonderful words of The Psalms.
